Ellis: Into the Wild and Far From Home

Image
Ellis awoke after a fitful rest. His sleep was plagued with dreams of his father. He felt himself falling and falling until he awoke with a jolt. He opened his eyes and saw that the sun had begun to rise over the eastern mountains. It was time for him to go.     Jerry was waiting at the stable, awake and ready to depart. Ellis loaded the cargo for his quests onto Jerry along with his lantern and non-essential goods. He strapped his sword and shield to his back and began to make his way out of the mountains. Ellis would follow the old trade road through the crags to his southeast until the mountains gave way to the dense forests of the Dragon's Flame Timberlands.      Nestled between the inhospitable northern ranges and the desolate southern desert, the Timberlands provided a respite for travelers looking to restock on food and water before venturing into the truly inhospitable extremes of the empire. Unfortunately, they also attracted a...

Intro: Ellis the Bold and Jerry the Mule

Image
The town of  Cessesta sat deep in the mountains of Elnariana hex 24 , in the rugged range between the Goldseeker Peaks and the Spiderweb Mountains. Isolated and impoverished, the town sat at the base of a sheer cliff, overshadowed by the fossilized skeleton of an ancient dragon. It was here that Ellis Hitheryon made his home. The Village of Cessessta (Midjourney)      The son of a butcher, Ellis had lived his whole life in Cessesta and had no intention of leaving until one day, he awoke to find his world turned upside down. The trails around Cessesta were treacherous and Ellis's father, along with his entire party, had fallen into a deep ravine while traveling back to Cessesta from neighboring Izan  hex 09.  Ellis's mother had died in childbirth and he had no siblings, so when news of his father's fall came to him, he was left with nothing.       For a few months, Ellis tried to run the shop to the best of his a...

The Empire of Elnariana

Image
This post will cover the creation of the setting of the solo campaign. It will be relatively short but warrants its own post so that world information is accessible in one place.  OOC Information and GM (me) adjudication will occur in italics.      The Empire of Elnariana is a rugged, mountainous region. It is ruled by a mysterious necromancer known as  Pancia of Taia from the City of Hannes hex 36, the only major city in the region. Very few settlements exist outside of Hannes, with a few on the coast, and several isolated villages in the mountains. In recent months, a prophecy of a young child heralding a new age of prosperity to Elnariana has spread across the empire. No one knows where the prophecy came from, but some find this possibility undesirable and are secretly working to undermine it.     In order to generate a world quickly, I simply went to  Hexroll  and generated a large map (16 regions), many dungeons, and...

Introduction

Who are you? What is this?      A general intro into why I'm creating this blog can be found in this  Reddit post. Long story short, I have been playing 5e as both a character and a DM for the last few years. I recently started reading about Old School Renaissance and classic TTRPGs and decided to learn the mechanics of Old School Essentials by running a solo hexcrawl in a randomly generated world. The posts on this blog will cover adventures in the Empire of Elnariana with commentary on my thought process on OSE and solo rulings. Who is this for?     My intent is for this blog to mostly be a stream of consciousness for my own experience with both solo roleplaying and OSR but I hope that it'll be useful for others who are curious about OSR/OSE or are curious about solo roleplaying. What's next?     The next few posts will detail my philosophy/motivation for my setting/game and solo gaming, the creation of the world of Elnariana, and finally t...
